Inch screws: Everything about UNC, UNF and BSF threads

    Zollschrauben-Alles-ueber-UNC-UNF-und-BSF-Gewinde

Inch screws are screws with inch dimensions that are primarily used in the USA and Great Britain. Here we explain the differences between UNC, UNF and BSF screws and their applications. Particular attention is paid to the Whitworth thread, which has a specific flank angle of 55° and is widely used in mechanics and engineering.

The most important things at a glance

        • Inch screws are available in various categories including metric and inch screws, which are essential fasteners in the industry. They are available in various thread types including UNC, UNF and BSF, which differ in their pitch and specific applications.

        • Choosing the right material and surface treatment is critical to the strength and corrosion resistance of inch screws, especially in the engineering, automotive and construction industries.

        • The selection of the appropriate inch screw should be based on thread size, head shape, material and strength to meet the specific requirements of the application.

    Types of inch screws

    arten-von-zollschrauben

Inch screws are available in various thread types, with the most common variants being UNC, UNF and BSF. These thread types differ primarily by the number of threads per inch and their specific applications. Our products include a wide range of screws, available in different thread types and categories. Discover numerous products in our shop at fair prices.

UNC (Unified National Coarse) and UNF (Unified National Fine) are standardized thread types that are mainly used in the USA, while BSF (British Standard Fine) is mainly used in British applications. Each of these thread types offers specific advantages and is particularly suitable for certain applications.

    UNC (Unified National Coarse)

The American coarse thread, known as UNC, is a uniform standard thread used in various applications. UNC threads are particularly common on screws with hexagon heads, lens heads and cylinder heads. This type of thread features a lower number of threads per inch, making it ideal for applications where quick assembly and disassembly is required.

The main difference between UNC and UNF is the number of threads per inch. UNC threads have fewer threads per inch than UNF, meaning they have a coarser pitch. This makes them more robust and less susceptible to damage, making them ideal for applications that involve high mechanical stress.

    UNF (Unified National Fine)

The UNF thread (Unified National Fine) is a special form of inch thread characterized by a finer pitch. This fine pitch allows for a more precise and stronger connection, making it ideal for applications where high strength is required.

Compared to UNC threads, UNF has a finer pitch, meaning there are more threads per inch. This makes UNF threaded screws particularly suitable for use in the mechanical engineering industry, where high precision and reliability are required.

BSF (British Standard Fine) and Whitworth thread

The BSF thread (British Standard Fine) is a special type of thread that is primarily used in British applications. The flank angle of the BSF thread is 55°, which distinguishes it from American thread types. This type of thread is often used in the mechanical engineering industry, where high strength and reliability are required.

BSF threaded screws are particularly suitable for applications where a strong and durable connection is required. They are typically more robust and resistant to mechanical stress, making them ideal for use in demanding environments.

Materials and surface treatments for inch screws

Inch screws are available in different materials and with different surface treatments that affect their strength and corrosion resistance. Choosing the right material and surface treatment is crucial for the performance and longevity of the screws in their specific application. Our company is certified and offers a variety of items with no minimum order value.

The most common materials include stainless steel and steel, while surface treatments range from untreated to special coatings such as black oxide.
